Tanzania accommodation types explained
Hotel
A permanent building with private guest rooms and shared services. City hotels are useful for arrival nights, transfers and urban visits.
Resort
A property where the stay itself is a major part of the holiday, usually with several leisure facilities and places to eat. Facilities and meal plans differ.
Safari lodge
A permanent property in or near a wildlife area, with rooms or cottages and a central dining space. It may be simple, luxurious or high-end.
Tented camp
Accommodation under canvas, ranging from basic camping to furnished tents with private bathrooms. A tent does not automatically mean a budget stay.
Tented lodge
A more substantial tented property, often on raised platforms with permanent bathrooms and extensive shared facilities.
Campsite
A place to pitch a tent, usually with shared facilities. Confirm whether the tent, bedding, meals and camping equipment are part of your arrangement.
Hostel or guesthouse
A smaller, usually informal place to stay. Hostels may offer dormitories and private rooms; guesthouses generally focus on private rooms.
Villa or private house
