Mafia Island Holidays
Mafia is a quieter island choice for marine life, small lodges and coastal communities. Chole Bay and the Utende area provide a natural base for marine-park activities, while other parts of the island offer different beach and village settings.
Why choose it
Choose Mafia when snorkelling, diving and a slower pace matter more than a large resort scene. Guided trips can combine reefs with island history and community visits. Whale-shark outings are seasonal and separate from ordinary reef snorkelling; ask what is realistic for your dates.
How to get there
The practical route for most visitors is a flight from Dar es Salaam to Kilindoni airport, followed by a road transfer to the lodge. Connections from other safari areas may require a change. Allow for small-aircraft baggage limits and avoid assuming an international-flight connection will work without checking the timetable.
Who it suits
Mafia suits couples, marine enthusiasts, divers and families comfortable with smaller lodges and boat-based outings. It is less suited to visitors who want extensive nightlife or predictable all-day swimming immediately outside every room. Divers must allow the required interval before flying.
Climate and when to visit
The coast is warm and humid throughout the year. June to October is generally drier; December to February is often hot, with sunshine between showers. March to May is usually wetter, and shorter rains often arrive around November. Trade winds, tides and local weather affect boat trips and swimming in every season.
