Tartaruga Safaris · Slow Down. See More.

Africa invites you to experience the world at a different pace. Watch a family of elephants feed and listen to your guide explain tracks in the sand. Share a meal with local hosts, then end the day beneath a wide evening sky. The continent is wonderfully varied. Choose a journey for the landscapes, people and experiences that interest you, rather than expecting one country to represent them all.
Why begin your African journey in Tanzania?
Tanzania brings together wildlife plains, volcanic highlands, mountains, living cultures and the Indian Ocean. You can focus on one region or combine safari and beach time without trying to fit every destination into one holiday. At Tartaruga Safaris, we start with your priorities and build a route with enough time to enjoy them.
Our philosophy is simple: Slow Down. See More. A rewarding safari includes the quieter moments—watching giraffes browse, learning bird calls and allowing your guide time to interpret what is happening around you.
Choose the Tanzania experience that suits you
| Destination | What you can look forward to |
|---|---|
| Serengeti & Ndutu | Open plains, big cats and the seasonal wildebeest migration. Choose the camp area for your travel month; a river crossing cannot be scheduled. |
| Ngorongoro Conservation Area | Crater wildlife, volcanic scenery and broader highland landscapes. Allow time for the journey and a separately arranged crater descent. |
| Tarangire | Elephants, baobabs and varied savannah habitats; particularly appealing for watching animal behaviour around dry-season water. |
| Lake Manyara & Mto wa Mbu | Forest, Rift Valley scenery and birdlife, with locally hosted cultural and food experiences outside the park. |
| Arusha National Park | Forest, lakes, giraffes and Mount Meru scenery. A useful shorter outing near Arusha; authorised guided walks need advance arrangements. |
| Kilimanjaro & Mount Meru | Guided mountain journeys that reward preparation, realistic pacing and acclimatisation. Summit success is never guaranteed. |
| Lake Natron & Lake Eyasi | Natron landscapes and locally guided walks; respectful Hadzabe and Datoga visits around Eyasi, with hosts deciding what to share. |
| Ruaha, Nyerere & Mikumi | Southern safari landscapes, varied wildlife and room for longer journeys. Flights may make a combination more practical than long road transfers. |
| Gombe & Mahale | Forest trekking to look for chimpanzees beside Lake Tanganyika. Plan dedicated travel time, permits and suitable fitness expectations. |
| Zanzibar & nearby islands | Combine Stone Town, beach time and separately booked water activities. Tides, weather and your chosen coast affect each day. |
| Mafia, Thanda & Mbudya | Mafia for island and marine experiences, Thanda for an exclusive private-island enquiry, and Mbudya for a shorter escape from Dar es Salaam; these are very different trips. |
Meet the Big Five—and look beyond the checklist
The Big Five are lion, leopard, African elephant, African buffalo and rhinoceros. It is a historical name, not a list of the five largest animals. A Serengeti and Ngorongoro combination offers opportunities to search for all five, but leopard and black rhino encounters are especially unpredictable. Tarangire is a strong choice for elephants; lion, buffalo and other species require a route matched to their habitats.
Cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hippos, wild dogs, chimpanzees and the remarkable birdlife can be just as memorable. Tell us your wildlife interests so we can recommend appropriate parks. Explore our Tanzania wildlife guide.
Accommodation is part of your safari
A canvas tent can mean a simple camping experience or a spacious suite with an en-suite bathroom. A lodge can be a comfortable country retreat or an exclusive property with extensive facilities. Labels alone do not tell you how well a stay fits your route.
We consider location, room arrangement, meals, travel time and the comfort you actually want. A well-positioned midrange camp may be a better choice for your particular itinerary than a much more expensive lodge far from your wildlife focus. Browse accommodation or compare budget, midrange, luxury and high-end options.
When a cheap safari becomes expensive
A lower price is not automatically a warning sign. A shorter route, shared vehicle, simpler room or quieter season can offer genuine value. Problems arise when a quotation removes essential costs or promises a level of service that the budget cannot support.
An inadequately maintained vehicle can cost you wildlife time. An unsuitable overnight location can add hours of driving. Unclear park fees, meals or transfers can lead to unexpected payments. Poor preparation, weak communication or unsuitable guiding can affect the quality of the entire journey. These are practices to question, whatever the operator charges.
Ask for named accommodation or clearly explained alternatives, the vehicle and guide arrangements, actual inclusions, cancellation conditions and emergency contact details. Read our guide to comparing safari operators.
The highest price is not automatically the best fit
Premium rates can reflect remote logistics, private guiding, spacious suites, exclusive use or additional services. Those benefits may be worthwhile if you want them. They are less useful if they do not match your priorities. Compare the complete experience rather than assuming a higher price guarantees better wildlife sightings.
Our approach: clear value, personal planning
Tartaruga Safaris aims to provide a fair, clearly explained price for the route, accommodation and service you choose. We listen to your budget, show sensible trade-offs and explain what is included before you commit. We do not promise to be the cheapest operator or claim that every competitor is overpriced. Our goal is a professionally planned journey you understand and feel comfortable booking.
| What matters | How we plan with you |
|---|---|
| Your budget | Discuss what you want to spend and prioritise the experiences that matter most. |
| Your time | Choose realistic transfers and give important destinations enough nights. |
| Your comfort | Confirm property, room and meal arrangements in writing. |
| Your support | Keep a clear contact route before travel and throughout the agreed programme. |
| Your price | Explain inclusions, optional extras and the basis of the quotation. |
Advance payments and agreed instalments
Our standard safari payment schedule is a 20% deposit to confirm, 50% of the total 30 days before arrival, and the final 30% seven days before arrival. Payment of the final balance in cash on arrival is possible only if agreed in advance. Other arrangements must be agreed in writing; short-notice bookings and supplier commitments can require different deadlines.
These are advance payments towards your holiday, not a credit or lending product. Climbing and specialist arrangements may have different deposit requirements. Your written booking confirmation and Booking Terms govern your reservation. See payment information and what happens after booking.
Questions travellers ask
Can you work with a fixed budget?
Yes. Tell us your total budget, dates, group size and priorities. We will explain feasible choices and any compromises before you book.
Will we see every animal we request?
No operator can guarantee free-ranging wildlife sightings. We choose suitable habitats and allow time, while respecting park rules.
Can we combine a safari with a beach holiday?
Yes. We can propose a practical mainland and island combination, with transfers and flights clearly shown in your quotation.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes, according to the agreed advance-payment schedule. Any variation must be confirmed in writing before booking.
Do you offer accessible or halal-friendly trips?
Tell us your requirements early. We check specific vehicles, rooms, meals, activities and assistance, and confirm what can be arranged.
