Tartaruga Safaris · Slow Down. See More.

Filming in Tanzania can bring a powerful story to life: a Serengeti landscape, the patient work of a wildlife guide, or the changing light across a volcanic highland. A professional production needs a different plan from an ordinary holiday game drive. Tartaruga Safaris can help you discuss ground arrangements and identify the permissions that your proposed shoot will need.
Personal travel photographs or a production?
Tell us whether you want personal holiday photographs, a commercial campaign, a documentary, a broadcast production or monetised creator content. Describe the equipment and intended use. Do not assume that a small camera, a social-media platform or a one-person crew automatically removes permit requirements.
We will seek the appropriate classification before confirming a production itinerary. Approval belongs to the relevant authority; Tartaruga Safaris cannot issue a government permit.
Plan permits before travel
The Tanzania Film Board directs visiting filmmakers to submit an application with a synopsis, travel-document copies for participating crew and an equipment list. Its published guidance recommends applying at least one month before filming. Start earlier if the project involves several locations or specialist activities. Read the Film Board guidance.
National permission and permission to film at a particular location are separate questions. For each national park, conservation area, private lodge or community location, we must confirm the relevant authority’s current process and written conditions. Serengeti is managed under TANAPA; Ngorongoro Conservation Area has a separate authority. Zanzibar also requires its own location-specific checks.
Why production costs can exceed a normal game drive
| Cost area | What needs confirming |
|---|---|
| Permits and location fees | The project category, locations, crew numbers, filming days and current official charges. |
| Vehicle and guide time | Private use, camera space, longer waiting periods, early positioning and equipment transport. |
| Specialist support | Any required escort, local production support, translation, technical assistance or location liaison. |
| Accommodation and transport | Crew rooms, repositioning, local flights and equipment baggage allowances. |
| Operational needs | Charging, battery management, media backups, weather contingency and communications. |
| Additional permissions | Any separately approved drone operation, restricted area, community filming or unusual activity. |
We prepare a project-specific quotation after the brief and permissions are understood. There is no single “filming surcharge” that automatically covers every location or grants special access. Current official charges and supplier costs must be confirmed in writing.
Can a filming vehicle leave the road?
We do not sell unrestricted off-road access. A filming payment is not permission to trespass, enter closed areas, follow an animal off the approved route or cross private land. If your shot requires an exception, it must be expressly authorised in writing by the responsible land or park authority, with any escort and environmental conditions confirmed. If approval is absent, the shot must be planned from permitted access.
This page does not claim that any particular exception is currently available. We will ask the authority about your exact brief before including it in a quotation. Wildlife welfare and the guide’s safety decisions take priority over a shot.
Drones require separate preparation
TCAA’s published guidance for non-residents requires an import permit, drone registration, operator registration and an operations permit. It advises applying at least three weeks before arrival. Aviation approval does not replace permission from the filming location or guarantee that a park will allow a flight. Read current TCAA drone procedures.
Tell us about a drone before booking or travelling with it. We will not promise aerial wildlife footage, and no flight should be undertaken without the required approvals.
Choose locations around the story
| Location idea | Production planning focus |
|---|---|
| Serengeti | Open landscapes and wildlife behaviour; target area and season, patient observation, approved vehicle positioning. |
| Ngorongoro Conservation Area | Crater and highland scenery; separate authority permissions and specific location restrictions. |
| Tarangire, Ruaha, Nyerere and Mikumi | Habitat-specific wildlife stories, practical base camps and location-by-location approvals. |
| Gombe and Mahale | Primate welfare, forest trekking logistics, health protocols and strictly controlled observation. |
| Villages, towns and accommodation | Host consent, access agreements and respectful portrayal; school or child participation needs additional safeguarding. |
Send us your filming brief
Please send the project title and purpose, intended audience or outlet, preferred dates, locations, number of crew, equipment summary, drone plans and any special access requests. Add your accommodation preferences and the ground support you need. Send initial enquiries to info@tartarugasafaris.com; we can agree a suitable channel for sensitive application documents later.
We can discuss route planning, vehicles, guides, accommodation and transfers. Specialist production services, official permits and unusual access will be clearly identified as confirmed, pending or excluded. Read our photography and camera-equipment guide and explore our safari vehicles.
Questions travellers ask
Is filming allowed in Serengeti?
Productions may be possible subject to the applicable approvals and location conditions. Tell us what you intend to film so we can confirm the correct process before committing.
Does a park entry ticket cover a commercial shoot?
Do not assume it does. The project’s classification and any additional permissions or charges must be confirmed.
Can I pay more and drive anywhere?
No. Additional payment does not create unrestricted access. Any exception must be specifically authorised.
Can you guarantee a hunt or migration crossing?
No. We plan time and location, but wildlife behaviour cannot be guaranteed or staged.
Do you have a fixed filming price?
No. We quote according to your crew, schedule, locations, transport, accommodation and confirmed permissions.
Can I use a drone?
Only with the required aviation and location permissions. Check before travelling; a flight permit is not blanket permission to fly in a park.
How early should I enquire?
Start well ahead of travel. The Film Board recommends at least a month for its application and complex projects may need longer.
May I film local people?
Obtain informed permission and follow any location or cultural requirements. Never assume that a tourism booking grants image rights to everyone you meet.
