Accommodation and practical planning

This is a trekking programme. Town hotel stays before and after the climb are quoted separately. We confirm the services that are actually available for your dates before taking a booking. Tell us the number of adults, children’s ages, dietary requirements and any mobility needs. Room layouts, vehicle access and activity participation requirements vary, so they must be checked for your own party.

Keep time between flights and the start of your programme. Road conditions, weather and local arrangements can affect the order of activities. Optional experiences are available only when separately confirmed; they are not automatically included because they are mentioned as possibilities. Day 1

Shira approach to Shira 1 Camp

Our Tartaruga trekking team will meet you in Moshi for the agreed transfer and park registration. Check your equipment, meet the support crew and begin the first stage at a measured pace. Your guide will explain the plan, organise breaks and review how you are feeling. Carry your daypack while the crew handles the agreed group equipment. Arrive at the overnight stop for a meal and briefing.
Meals: full board during the trek. Overnight: Shira 1 Camp.

Day 2

Shira Plateau exploration to Shira 2 Camp

Follow the route shown for today with your Tartaruga mountain guide. Take regular breaks and allow time to appreciate the changing terrain without racing other groups. Your support crew will prepare the next overnight stop and meals. Conditions can alter the day’s pace, so walking times remain flexible. In the afternoon, settle in, organise tomorrow’s layers and attend the guide’s briefing.
Meals: full board during the trek. Overnight: Shira 2 Camp.

Day 3

Shira 2 via Lava Tower to Barranco

Follow the route shown for today with your Tartaruga mountain guide. Take regular breaks and allow time to appreciate the changing terrain without racing other groups. Your support crew will prepare the next overnight stop and meals. Conditions can alter the day’s pace, so walking times remain flexible. In the afternoon, settle in, organise tomorrow’s layers and attend the guide’s briefing.
Meals: full board during the trek. Overnight: Barranco.

Day 4

Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

Start with the guided passage of the Barranco Wall, taking care on rocky sections and allowing other teams space. Follow your guide’s instructions and keep essential items secure. Continue across the intervening valleys to the next camp, where the crew will organise your meal and sleeping arrangements. This separate stage avoids combining the wall and the final summit-base approach into one long day.
Meals: full board during the trek. Overnight: Karanga Camp.

Day 5

Karanga to Barafu Camp

Follow today’s route towards the higher staging camp at a steady pace. The open landscape offers little shelter, so keep warm layers and weather protection close to hand. After arrival, eat, rest and organise the equipment needed for the summit attempt. Your guide will give a detailed briefing and assess whether the planned departure is appropriate. There is no need to rush the approach.
Meals: full board during the trek. Overnight: Barafu Camp.

Day 6

Summit attempt via Stella Point; descend to Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt at the time set by your guide, usually during the night. Move carefully through the cold and darkness, following the guide’s pacing and turnaround decisions. Reaching Uhuru Peak is conditional on weather, health and time; it is never guaranteed. After any summit attempt, descend with the team to the overnight stop named in today’s route. This is the longest and most demanding stage.
Meals: full board during the trek. Overnight: Mweka Camp.

Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Continue down with your guide, taking care on tired legs and wet or uneven sections. Complete the park exit formalities and meet the arranged vehicle for your return to Moshi. The trekking programme ends at the agreed town drop-off. A hotel night, airport transfer or safari extension can be added separately. Keep this day flexible rather than booking a tight onward connection.
Meals: breakfast and lunch. No mountain overnight tonight.

Your Questions Answered

How many days are spent trekking?
This programme contains 7 trekking days. Arrival and departure flights, Moshi hotel nights and any extra acclimatisation stay are additional arrangements. We recommend discussing the full travel schedule before booking.
Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?
No. Weather, altitude response and the guide’s assessment determine how far you go. Tell your guide promptly if you feel unwell and follow turnaround instructions. A longer itinerary may suit you better.
Will we camp or use huts?
This route uses mountain camps. The quotation will specify tent sharing, group equipment and optional extras. A safari accommodation category does not describe the standard of mountain camps.
Does this route suit my experience?
Discuss your previous trekking and altitude experience with our team. Ask a qualified clinician about your personal fitness for high-altitude travel. We will review the route and alternatives with you; a successful previous climb does not guarantee the same response this time.
Who accompanies the climb?
A Tartaruga-arranged mountain team, including professional guides, porters and a cook, supports the agreed trekking programme. Crew arrangements and included equipment are confirmed before payment.
What does the starting price mean?
Prices start at USD 2,700 per person for groups of six or more. The overview table shows the per-person rates for each group size from one to six or more. Refer to Includes & Excludes for the services covered. Your written quotation confirms your dates and arrangements.
What deposit is required?
For climbing, the initial deposit is USD 100–200 unless another written arrangement is agreed. Your quotation will state the exact deposit and balance schedule.
Can you accommodate dietary or accessibility needs?
Tell us about dietary needs, allergies, mobility requirements and any equipment you use. We will check the specific vehicle, accommodation and activities with providers. Accessibility or halal arrangements are confirmed individually rather than assumed.
Can I customise this trip?
Yes. Tell us what you want to change: duration, pace, accommodation or additional destinations. Our team will explain the effect on travel time and prepare an updated quotation. Changes are subject to availability.
