Choose a route to see its own itinerary collection. Marangu offers hut accommodation; the other main routes use camping. More days mean a less compressed programme, with additional time to adjust to altitude.
Marangu approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast and uses shared mountain huts. The ascent and descent follow the same corridor, making its landscape familiar on the return. Choose six days for an extra night at Horombo; the five-day option is a compressed climb with less time to acclimatise.
Machame climbs from rainforest on the southern slopes, crosses the Shira side of the mountain and continues through Barranco and Barafu. Camping, varied scenery and the Barranco Wall are central to this route. Compare six, seven and eight mountain days; extra days give a less compressed schedule.
Lemosho starts in the western forest before reaching the Shira Plateau and joining the southern circuit. It combines a broad range of landscapes with flexible pacing. Seven days compress the early approach; eight or nine allow more time on the mountain.
Rongai approaches from Kilimanjaro’s northern side and descends through Marangu, giving you a different return landscape. The longer variants spend more time near Mawenzi before the Kibo summit approach. The northern slopes are often drier, but rain, cold and wind remain possible.
This long route starts on the western side and traverses Kilimanjaro’s quieter northern slopes before approaching the summit from School Hut. It suits walkers who want time and varied mountain views. The eight-day version compresses the approach; nine and ten days allow additional acclimatisation time.
Shira reaches the western plateau using a higher access point than the forest-based Lemosho approach. That high start makes preparation and prior acclimatisation especially important. The route then joins the southern traverse, with camping throughout the climb.
Umbwe is a steep and direct southern approach for experienced trekkers. It reaches Barranco quickly, then follows the southern route via Barafu. These programmes avoid the technical Western Breach. Extra days help pacing but do not make the initial steep ascent an easy option.
