The best time to climb Kilimanjaro depends on your preferred weather, tolerance for busier trails and travel dates. The commonly chosen drier periods are January–February and June–October. A seasonal pattern is a planning guide, not a weather guarantee.

January and February
These months are often chosen for comparatively drier trekking conditions and clearer views. The upper mountain remains cold, and a sunny morning can still become a wet or cloudy afternoon. Keep the full equipment list even when your trip falls in a popular season.
March to May
The long-rain period commonly brings wetter approaches and reduced visibility. Mud and persistent damp make careful packing especially important. If you can travel at another time, discuss the trade-offs before choosing a wet-season expedition simply because a date is convenient.
June to October
This broad dry-season window is popular for mountain holidays. Some departures and camps can be busy, so reserve early if your dates or group arrangements are fixed. Cold, wind and occasional precipitation remain possible at altitude.
November and December
Short rains can affect November, while December conditions vary as the season changes. Holiday periods can be busy. Plan from current conditions and your available dates rather than assuming every December day will be dry.
Full moon or a quieter departure?
A full moon may add light and atmosphere to summit night, but clouds can hide it and popular dates attract more climbers. A quieter departure can be equally rewarding. Our team will help you compare the practical schedule, route and available arrangements.
Choose the best time to climb Kilimanjaro for you
First decide how much time you can give the trek. Then compare Kilimanjaro routes and leave room for arrival, equipment checks and recovery. Do not shorten the ascent simply to fit a flight sale or a specific summit date.
Use our packing list in every season. Ask your guide about recent conditions shortly before departure, and accept that summit plans may change. For official park information, visit Tanzania National Parks.
Plan smarter. Travel better.
Tell our Tartaruga Safaris team your dates, previous trekking experience and number of travellers. We will help you choose a realistic route and prepare a written quotation.
